Intro and background (5-6 mins)
I am K Raghu Ram Currently working as an SDE1 at Amazon. I completed my Btech in CSE from VSSUT Burla Tier-3 college.
I am from a middle-class family. As anyone who wishes to pursue his/her career in CSE, I dreamed of joining FAANG. But I encountered my first failure early on. In JEE mains my AIR was in upwards of 1 Lakh. And as the comic goes my rank had commas in it. And while applying luckily I was selected for VSSUT but to a branch that I had never heard of Metallurgy. This was a time when Sundar Pichai wasn’t the CEO of Google. FYI he started as CEO in 2015. So I had to kill all hopes and follow the deadly uncertain path. Fortunately, our university had a system in place wherein you could change your branch if you secured good grades in the first and second semesters, and with a little bit of work, I was able to achieve it.
After changing into CSE I first relaxed a lot in my studies and aggressively focused on robotics as I believed the practical application of studies was more important than ever. I was also fascinated by our team because they had built a bot capable of playing Badminton :-). I didn’t realize then but I missed a chance to learn Algorithm and DS at the time. I couldn’t get any decent internships or part-time jobs but I truly believed that the work I was doing was great and learned a lot during the process. I started competitive programming in my 3rd year and was in love with it. It transformed my mindset. I started looking at the world differently.
My goal became clear and I wanted to join FAANG. I kept trying for a job or internship but wasn’t successful in my attempts. I was selected for Infosys but had a Backlog in my final semester. Hence I couldn’t join Infosys and had to join a mid-tier company Mindfire. Looking back I am happy that I had a backlog and it turned out to be an amazing 2 years altogether.
Why should you hear me? (2 mins)
I am not going to lie as there’s nothing unique or attractive in me getting a job at Amazon. It’s just that I can empathize more with a lot of people in the audience. My normal suggestion would be “Google Karlo and learn”. But that doesn’t seem to work in this case. There is a lot of strategy and planning which goes into it.
Everyone thinks cracking a great job would be a win for them. But the actual test starts after you crack it. Your performance. We are highly adaptive social animals and every individual adapts to the surroundings in their way. All of us have seen gradual and sometimes outstanding progress in our careers but when it comes to the job this is not the case. You won’t be promoted to a higher role after 1 year of performance like a kid would be promoted from one class to another. A job is a lot more than that. The man who does more than he is paid for will soon be paid for more than he does. – Napoleon Hill. I believe and work on it every single day. Always outperform your peers and one day you will shine.

This is standard in almost all companies FAANG and most of the startups.

- The resume should be extremely polished and well built.
- Improve your connections and prepare yourselves every day.
- Work as if you would in amazon and someday it will come true.
I can definitely predict one question you all might be asking how can a person from Tier-3/4/5 university learn the skills necessary to get into companies that many IIT and NITans dream of. One word persistence. Nothing in the world can take the place of good old persistence. Talent won’t. There’s nothing more common than talented people not living great lives. Education won’t. Educated alone won’t do anything without practical skills. Genius won’t. Because even a diamond doesn’t have much value before it’s polished. Persistence and hard work alone are all-powerful.
